Abstract
When lubricating oil undergoes oxidation, its color darkens, sedimentation increases, and its corrosivity rises, leading to a decline in its performance. Therefore, it is essential to understand the causes of oxidation in lubricants so that we can develop appropriate countermeasures and implement strategies to minimize oxidative degradation.
Causes of lubricant oxidation:
1. The substance itself. Its chemical composition possesses oxidizing properties.
2. Temperature. As temperature rises, the oxidation rate of lubricating oil accelerates.
3. Metals. Sometimes lubricants are used in metal environments, where metals can catalyze the oxidation of the lubricant.
4. Air: The lubricant has an excessively large contact area with the air. As atmospheric pressure increases, the oxygen content per unit volume of air rises, leading to accelerated oxidation.
5. Moisture. Excessive moisture in lubricating oil can compromise the oil film, and it significantly accelerates the formation of sludge and varnish from oxidation products.

Preventive measures:
From the perspective of lubricant performance additives, it is possible to capture peroxides and scavenge oxidation products.
1. Adding an antioxidant and anti‑gumming agent allows it to react with free radicals, neutralizing their reactivity and thereby inhibiting oxidation.
2. The addition of antioxidants and preservatives can decompose peroxides, reduce their concentration, and thereby slow down oxidative degradation.
3. The addition of detergents and dispersants can prevent the formation of carbon deposits, varnish, and sludge in the engine, achieving this through four mechanisms: detergency, dispersion, solubilization, and neutralization.
Choosing lubricants formulated with high-quality additives—such as antioxidant and anti‑sludge agents, antioxidant and anti‑corrosion agents, and detergents and dispersants—provides superior oxidation resistance and enhanced circulating cleanliness, thereby effectively reducing oxidation. When selecting lubricants, users can opt for products that boost operational efficiency and extend the service life of equipment.
